1. Not Understanding What Digital Marketing Actually Is
Before you dive into digital marketing, it’s worth taking a moment to understand what it actually means. And don’t worry, it sounds much more complicated than it really is!
Digital marketing is essentially any way you promote your business online. That could be your website, social media, email marketing, online advertising, search engines and more.
If you’re using the internet to help people discover your business, learn about what you offer, buy from you or simply remember you exist, you’re doing digital marketing.
Simple, right?
The important thing is understanding how all these different pieces can work together to help your business. You don’t need to become an expert overnight, but having a basic understanding will make it much easier to decide where to focus your time and money.

2. Spreading Resources Too Thin
Ever heard the phrase “jack of all trades, master of none“? Well, that can easily happen with digital marketing. When you’re running a small business, there are only so many hours in the day, and your marketing budget isn’t unlimited either. Trying to be everywhere at once can mean you’re spreading yourself (and your resources) far too thin.
You don’t need to be on every social media platform, run paid ads, send regular emails, write blogs and master SEO all at the same time. Honestly, who has the time for all that?!
The key is to work out where your customers actually are and focus your efforts there. Ask yourself:
- Which social media platforms does my target audience use?
- How much can I realistically spend on marketing?
- How much time can I dedicate to creating and managing content?
- Which marketing activities are most likely to help me reach my goals?
Once you’ve answered these questions, choose a few key areas to focus on and do them well. It’s much better to have one social media account that’s active, engaging, and actually reaches your customers than five accounts that you barely have time to update.
And remember, you can always expand later. Start small, see what works, learn as you go, and then build from there. Digital marketing isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the right things for your business.

3. Putting All Your Eggs In One Basket
Okay, so we’ve just told you not to spread yourself too thin. Now we’re saying don’t focus on too little either! It’s all about finding the right balance and not falling for either digital marketing mistakes.
If you put all your marketing efforts into one platform, such as Facebook, you’re potentially missing out on customers elsewhere. Plus, what happens if the algorithm changes or your reach suddenly drops?
The great thing about digital marketing is that different channels can work together. Someone might discover you on social media, sign up for your newsletter, then visit your website a few weeks later before becoming a customer.
When you’re getting started, we’d recommend focusing on:
- One organic social media channel – Choose the platform where your customers are most likely to be.
- Basic website SEO – Help potential customers find your business through search engines.
- Regular email marketing – Keep in touch with your audience and stay front of mind.
Once you’ve got these basics in place, you can start exploring paid advertising, content marketing and additional platforms. You don’t need to do everything at once. Just make sure you’re not relying on one channel to do all the hard work!
4. Not Having A Plan
Let’s be honest, a little bit of planning can save you a whole lot of stress! Digital marketing is much easier when you have a basic plan in place. You don’t need a massive 50-page strategy document (who has time for that?), but you should have a good idea of what you want to achieve, who you’re trying to reach and how you’re going to get there.
Start by doing your research, set yourself some goals and don’t be afraid to test different things. You might even want to plan your content a few weeks or months ahead, so you’re not scrambling for ideas at the last minute.
But here’s the important bit: don’t get so caught up in your plan that you forget to pay attention to what’s happening right now.
Keep an eye on trends, listen to what your customers are talking about and make sure your website and social media are up to date. You don’t want to jump on every trend going, but you also don’t want to be the business that discovers something six months after everyone else has moved on!
The best digital marketing plans aren’t just written and forgotten about. They’re tested, tweaked and improved as you go.
Keep checking your analytics to see what’s working, pay attention to what your audience responds to and make changes when you need to. Keep doing more of what works, but don’t be afraid to experiment with something new too.

5. Not Having A Clear Target Audience
We’ve mentioned your target audience already, but this one deserves its own section because knowing who you’re talking to is essential and is an extremely common digital marketing mistake.
If you don’t know who your ideal customers are, how do you know where to find them? What kind of content will they enjoy? What tone of voice should you use? And, most importantly, what is it about your business that actually matters to them?
Think about it like this: imagine standing in the middle of a busy crowd shouting your business name at everyone. Some people might listen, but most will probably wonder, “Is this for me?”
Instead, take some time to work out who you really want to attract. Think about their interests, needs, problems and what they’re looking for from a business like yours.
Once you understand your audience, your marketing becomes much easier. You can create content that speaks directly to them, choose the platforms they’re actually using and explain your products or services in a way that makes sense to them.
You don’t need to appeal to absolutely everyone. The more clearly you understand the people you want to reach, the more likely you are to connect with the right customers.
6. Inconsistency
Here’s the thing about social media: you don’t have to post every single day, but you do need to show up! Imagine a potential customer finds your business on Instagram or Facebook, has a look at your page and sees that your last post was six months ago. Their first thought might be, “Are they still trading?” or “Do they actually respond to customers?” Not exactly the impression you want to make, hence why it’s on our list of digital marketing mistakes!
The good news is that consistency doesn’t mean you need to spend hours creating content every day. One useful, engaging post a week is much better than posting five times one week and then disappearing for months.
Find a schedule that works for you and, most importantly, that you can actually stick to. You could even batch-create a few posts at once and schedule them in advance. That way, your social media stays active while you get on with running your business.
You don’t need to be everywhere, and you don’t need to post constantly. Just be consistent, be present and give your audience a reason to keep coming back.

7. Not Being GDPR Compliant
Okay, this one might not be the most exciting part of digital marketing, but it’s really important, especially if you’re collecting customer information. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) can sound a bit complicated, but the basic idea is simple: you need to handle people’s personal data responsibly and legally.
If you’re collecting names and email addresses for a newsletter, storing customer details or using data for marketing, you need to make sure you’re following the rules. That includes being clear about how you’re using people’s information and making sure you have the right permissions where required.
It’s easy to think, “I’ll sort that out later,” but GDPR isn’t something you want to ignore. Getting it wrong can lead to complaints, damaged trust and potentially some very costly consequences for your business.
Our advice? Don’t guess. Make sure you understand the rules that apply to your business and, if you’re unsure, get professional advice. Taking a little time to get your data practices right now could save you a whole lot of stress later. Plus, your customers will appreciate knowing that their information is being treated with care.
